Americans Dominate The French Open Draw

Americans at Roland Garros

The French Open without the King of Clay is not the same. Rafael Nadal, we miss you, get better soon. I love tennis and I will always love tennis; however, this is the first time I have felt a little blah about tennis. However, I got a little excited because there are thirty-four American men and women in the 2023 Roland Garros’ draw. Day one is over, and some American players said goodbye.

Americans Who Advanced To Round Two

Unfortunately for Danielle Collins, she had to play fellow American, [3] Jessica Pegula. The first set was competitive, but it was all Pegula in the second set. Pegula won 6-4, 6-2. [24] Sebastian Korda won the battle of Americans 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. Tough luck for Mackenzie McDonald.

Seeds That Fell On Day One

This was always going to be a tough match for [8] Maria Sakkari. Karolina Muchova is a tough opponent and she proved that once again with her 7-6(5), 7-5 defeat of Sakkari. [20] Daniel Evans continues to struggle to find his form. Evans lost to the big serving Australian, Thanasi Kokkinakis, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6.  Leylah Fernandez is finding her form, she defeated [21] Magda Linette 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. [29] Shuai Zhang lost easily to Magdalena Frech, 1-6, 1-6.  [30] Ben Shelton bows out in the first round to Lorenzo Sonego. Shelton managed to win the second set; however, he could not use the momentum to propel him to victory. The Italian won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Americans Who Lost On Day One

Maxime Cressy lost in straight sets to qualifier, Sebastian Ofner, 4-6, 6-7(6), 2-6. Katie Volynets lost 0-6, 1-6 to [15] Liudmila Samsonova. American wildcard, Patrick Kypson, lost in four sets to the often-dangerous Radu Albot. Emilio Nava lost in straight sets to Roberto Carballes Baena. After all her hard work to get through the qualifying rounds, Taylor Townsend lost easily in round one. The American was no match for [24] Anastasia Potapova.  Madison Brengle lost 3-6, 1-6 to Mayar Sherif. John Isner lost a tough five-set battle to Nuno Borges. Borges won the tiebreaker 7-6(11) to steal the match. It’s never easy to lose, but when you battle hard and lose, it is painful.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Which American man will go furthest in the draw?
