Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was ranked as high as eleven a few years ago. Like many players, injuries have taken a toll not only on her body but also on her ranking. At thirty-one-years-old with time running, she is playing quality tennis despite her current ranking of 333. Today, the Russian denied [3] Elise Mertens the straight sets victory by battling hard in set two. After winning the second set tiebreak, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova took her game to another level to win 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3.

Fallen Seeds On Day 8

[1] Carlos Alcaraz made it look easy against the talented [17] Lorenzo Musetti. Alcaraz won 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Elina Svitolina continues to have a winning comeback following her pregnancy. The Ukrainian defeated [9] Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-6(5). This should probably come as no surprise and Svitolina has never lost a match to Kasatkina in six previous matches.

Some Doubles Result Of Interest

[2] Jessica Pegula is still going strong in doubles with her partner, Coco Gauff. After dropping the first set to the thirteenth seeds, the American duo came roaring back. They won 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. The duo of [4] Ivan Dodig and American Austin Krajicek had a battle on their hands. After dropping the first set, they came back to win 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5. [6] Nicole Melichar and Ellen Perez defeated the eleventh seeds 6-0, 6-3.

Americans Still Alive In Singles

There are NO American men left in the singles draw. However, there are two women left in the singles draw. One may be a surprise, but the other many expected to still be going strong. [36] Bernarda Pera has never gone past the third round of any major. Thus, this is new ground for the twenty-eight-year-old. Pera reached a career high of thirty-two on April 24, 2023. The American will have a battle on her hands against [7] Ons Jabeur. The good news is that they are tied 1:1, with Pera winning their last encounter.

[6] Coco Gauff will face Anna Karolina Schmiedlova next. Gauff won their only encounter last year. However, do not be misled by her current ranking. Schmiedlova has been ranked as high as twenty-six.
