Dominic Stricker UPSETS Stefanos Tsitsipas

Dominic Stricker

Dominic who? Perhaps Dominic Stricker had reason to be confident given that Stefanos Tsitsipas was bounced in the first round last year. Stricker pommels the ball and despite his size, he is quite fit. He reminds me of another powerful and strong Swiss player, Stan Wawrinka. This Swiss player is just twenty-one and if he can be consistent, we can expect a lot from him. He has only been on tour for three years, so he is still growing into his game.

Dominic Stricker Played Power Tennis

[7] Stefanos Tsitsipas must be wondering what is going on with him and the US Open. He was leading and led and still could not gain the victory. By the final set, he was mentally finished. Stricker won 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-3. In their only previous encounter, it was all Tsitsipas. What a difference a year makes for the young Swiss. Stricker out hit and out lasted his opponent.

Victorious Day 3 Americans

[6] Coco Gauff had a quirky start against the teen phenom, Mirra Andreeva, but she righted the ship to advance to the third round. Gauff won 6-3, 6-2. [132] Taylor Townsend is still believing. She fought for the victory over [19] Beatriz Haddad Maia. The first set went to a tiebreak, which was dominated by the American. The second set was just as competitive. Townsend won 7-6(1), 7-5.

[9] Taylor Fritz defeated Juan Pablo Varillas 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. [10] Frances Tiafoe is really embracing his top ten status. He was crisp and hit the ball extremely well for most of his match. He defeated Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Ofner spent the entire match shaking his head in confusion, he simply could not figure out how to beat the American.

[14] Tommy Paul was pushed by Roman Safiullin. The Russian led 2-0 sets before Paul woke up. Paul won 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. Ben Shelton defeated Dominic Thiem by retirement. Shelton won the first set 7-6(1) and was leading the second 1-0 before Thiem retired. Seems like some bug is going around the locker room.

Nice to see Jennifer Brady back. Brady had been MIA since August 2021 due to a right knee injury. Her return to tennis was further delayed by a left foot injury. Brady got the better of [24] Magda Linette, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Bernarda Pera is still going strong. She won the second set tiebreaker and then turned the match around to win 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. Pera defeated Xiyu Wang.

Seeds Who Fell On Day 3

[5] Casper Ruud got a rude awakening by Zhizhen Zhang. It was a bit surprising after Ruud won the fourth set 6-0. Zhang won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. [11] Petra Kvitova lost in a tight two-set battle. Caroline Wozniacki, who retired from tennis in 2020, defeated Kvitova 7-5, 7-6(5).

Lin Zhu upset [18] Victoria Azarenka. Zhu won 6-3, 6-3. Despite looking fit and ready, Azarenka just did not turn up today, so unlike her. [20] Francisco Cerundolo lost to Jiri Vesely. The Czech won both tiebreak sets to win 7-6(5), 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(10-6). The Cerundolo brothers lost on the same day. American [28] Christopher Eubanks lost both tiebreakers to lose to Benjamon Bonzi. The Frenchman won 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(7).
