Americans Who Were Victorious On Day One

[6] Coco Gauff defeated Laura Siegemund in three sets. Siegmund surprised Gauff by taking the first set, but she could not keep it up. Gauff won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. [9] Taylor Fritz defeated fellow American, Steve Johnson, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. [10] Frances Tiafoe got past fellow American, Learner Tien. The seventeen year old pushed him a little in set two, but Tiafoe came back strong in the final set. Tiafoe won 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. [14] Tommy Paul defeated Stefano Travaglia, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

[28] Christopher Eubanks defeated Soonwoo Kwon in four sets. Kwon served a bagel to the American in the third set. However, Eubanks regained his focus to win 6-3, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Taylor Townsend defeated Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-2. Danielle Collins came out red hot. She defeated Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2, 6-0. Ben Shelton defeated Pedro Cachin 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and Lauren Davis defeated Danka Kovinic 6-2, 6-2.

A Day Of Upset Of The Seeded Players

[4] Holger Rune losing was a shocker, but perhaps not. I think he had an injury. That was the impression I got when I saw him practicing with Andy Murray. Roberto Carballes Baena upset the fourth seed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. [8] Maria Sakkari lost to Rebeka Masarova, 4-6, 4-6.

[15] Felix Auger-Aliassime continues to struggle to find his game. The Canadian lost to American Mackenzie McDonald, 6-7(5), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.  American Bernarda Pera defeated [16] Veronika Kudermetova 7-5, 6-4. [28] Anhelina Kalinina lost to Sara Sorribes Tormo 4-6, 5-7.  [29] Elisabetta Cocciaretto lost her way. The Italian lost to Kaja Juvan, 2-6, 5-7.

[18] Lorenzo Musetti lost to the qualifier, Titouan Droguet. A bit of a surprise perhaps, but Droguet has a big game and if you have never played him before, he can disrupt your rhythm. Droguet won 6-3, 0-6, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2. Looks like Musetti ran out of gas in the end, which seems to be his modus operandi.

Domnic Thiem Showed Bublik He’s Not Disabled

[25] Alexander Bublik lost to Dominic Thiem. Thiem showed his opponent that he is not ‘disabled,’ despite Bublik’s sarcastic comment about Thiem. Good for Thiem, who easily dispatched Bublik 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. American [31] Sebastian Korda is still struggling to find consistency in his game. Interestingly, Korda just defeated Marton Fucsovics in the preceding tournament, and he shows up at the US Open and loses to him, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-4, 4-6.
