Men’s US Open Quarterfinals

The top three ranked men are still going strong. [1] Carlos Alcaraz will have his hands full against [12] Alexander Zverev. Surprisingly, Zverev leads their H2H 3:2. More importantly, Zverev has never lost to Alcaraz on a hard court. Perhaps this is Zverev’s time. [2] Novak Djoker probably has the easiest path to the semifinals. Djokovic plays [9] Taylor Fritz. Fritz has never won a match against the Serbian in seven encounters. Djokovic regains the number one ranking on Monday.

[3] Daniil Medvedev will play against fellow countryman, [8] Andrey Rublev. This could be interesting. Although Medvedev leads their H2H 5:2, Rublev seems inspired at this US Open. The question is can he bring it when it matters. [10] Frances Tiafoe will contest his match against fellow countryman, Ben Shelton. Shelton is playing fearless tennis, but he is still green. Tiafoe looks ready to step up big time.

Women’s US Open Quarterfinals

The top ranked player left in the draw is [2] Aryna Sabalenka. She will play [23] Qinwen Zheng. These two have never met. Sabalenka seems confident, but we know she can unravel, and her serve can go awry. Still, her experience must count for something; thus, I think she will be too much firepower for Zheng. Sabalenka will be the new number one ranked female on Monday. [6] Coco Gauff will play [20] Jelena Ostapenko. Their H2H is tied at 1:1. This is home soil for the American, will this give her that extra something to propel her by the resurgence of Ostapenko. I am going with Gauff to step up the challenge. However, she must get through the nerves and focus.

[9] Marketa Vondrousova will play against [17] Madison Keys. They are both power players, but Vondrousova has done something that Keys has not, she has won a major. Keys should take note that a wounded warrior is a dangerous opponent. Apparently, Vondrousova has an arm injury due to the heavy balls. Keys has a great opportunity to get back to the US Open semifinals. This will be their first meeting. [10] Karolina Muchova is sailing under the radar, but she is a dangerous opponent for anyone when she is healthy. Still, [30] Sorana Cirstea is the surprise of the tournament. However, I don’t expect Cirstea to advance to the semifinals because she is 1:3 in their H2H.
