How The Americans Fared On Day Two

[16] Ben Shelton held his nerve against the often dangerous opponent, Roberto Bautista Agut. It was a battle in the second and third sets, but the American prevailed 6-2, 7-6(2), 7-5. [29] Sebastian Korda almost let it slip away to qualifier Vit Kopriva. The Czech player fought back to win the third and fourth sets before Korda regained his game to win 6-1, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2.

McCartney Kessler, another player I have never heard of, much less seen, defeated the qualifier, Fiona Ferro 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Nice to see Christopher Eubanks with an easy straight sets victory. The American defeats Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Daniel was depleted after his deep run in Auckland, where he lost in the final to Alejandro Tabilo. Aleksandar Kovacevic defeated Alejandro Tabilo in a tough five set battle, which had two tiebreaker sets. The American had to fight back to win 6-7(2), 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Another opponent that was depleted from his recent victory in Auckland.

Patrick Kypson, Kayla Day, Taylor Townsend, Bernarda Pera, Claire Liu, and Katie Volynets were the Americans who lost in the first round on day two.

Naomi Osaka’s bid to make a comeback continues to be rocky. In her first tournament since September 2022, the Japanese player lost in the second round to Karolina Pliskova. Hoping that things would improve at the Australian Open, she ran into Caroline Garcia. In their one previous encounter at the 2021 Australian Open it was an easy victory for Osaka, not this time. [16] Caroline Garcia won 6-4, 7-6(2). The struggle is real for Denis Shapovalov, who is currently ranked one hundred and sixteen. The Canadian lost to qualifier Jakub Mensik 3-6, 5-7, 5-7. Mensik is just eighteen years old.
