Taylor Townsend Upsets Maja Chwalinska

Taylor Townsend

Taylor Townsend moves into the second round. The American upset the twentieth seed, Maja Chwalinska, 6-2, 6-3. Townsend continues to chase that illusive singles title, which is probably really frustrating given her doubles success. The highest she has been ranked in singles was forty six in 2024. Townsend has been ranked number one in doubles.

Taylor Townsend, Major Doubles Champion

Taylor Townsend made it to her first singles final earlier this season in Austin. Sadly, she fell short. She has won all the major doubles titles, except the US Open. In 2022 and 2025, Townsend made it to the US Open doubles final but fell short both times. While it will not be a singles title, I know she would be thrilled to win the US Open doubles title. I am rooting for Townsend to get that first singles title and the US Open doubles title.

Other American Day Two Successes

[8] Ben Shelton got off to a rough start in his match against Tallon Griekspoor. He dropped the first set only winning one game. Shelton quickly evened the match, winning the second set 6-1. The third set could have shifted the entire match for Griekspoor. Thankfully, Shelton found his game in time to win the tiebreaker and the match 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2. [10] Amanda Anisimova dispatched of fellow American, Ashlyn Krueger, 6-1, 6-3. [11] Frances Tiafoe got a scare from fellow American, Martin Damm. Damm led 2:1 sets but lost the last two sets. [14] Learner Tien defeated Nuno Borges 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. [16] Brandon Nakashima defeated Sebastian Baez in a very convincing manner. He took no prisoners today, winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. Baez never got into the match. [26] Emma Navarro was pushed hard in the first two sets. They split the first two tiebreakers, and the winner would be the player who won the third set. Navarro won 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-3. 1, 6-0. [29] Ann Li got by a tough opponent to win 7-5, 6-1.

Alex Michelsen took some time figuring out the game of his opponent in the first set. Once he found his rhythm, there was no looking back. Michelsen defeated Federico Cina 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Caty Mc Nally defeated Anouk Koevermans 7-5, 6-1. Sebastian Gorzny, ranked in the seven hundreds, went the distance and came away with the victory. Raphael Collignon certainly was not happy with this loss. Gorzny won 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(9). This was a shocker, former US Open champion, Sloane Stephens, defeated Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-1.

Fils Amongst Fallen Day Two Seeds

[10] Arthur Fils served for the second set to go up two sets to love. Keep in mind he had never lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in five previous meetings, but today the wheels completely fell off.  Tsitsipas won 4-6, 7-6(3),6-1, 6-4. So, what happened today? A mental, emotional, and ultimately physical collapse.

Cristina Bucsa defeated [28] Sara Bejlek. Bejlek mounted some resistance in the first two sets but wilted in the third set. The Spaniard won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. [30] Matteo Arnaldi ran into the veteran, James Duckworth. Unfortunately for him, he came out on the losing end of things. Despite winning the first set, he could not hold on to his momentum and things shifted early in the second set. The Australian won 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(8).
