Sonay Kartal Continues Her Rise Following Her Return From Injury

Sonay Kartal

Sonay Kartal’s journey has been one of steady persistence and growing belief. After beginning on the ITF circuit in 2019 and capturing her first professional title in Monastir in 2024, the British player has continued her ascent, reaching a career-high ranking of number 44 in 2025. What made her recent run at the Wuhan Open particularly impressive was not just reaching the final, but the caliber of opponents she defeated along the way. Kartal defeated three former top 10 players and one current top 10 player before eventually falling to Maja Chwalińska, showcasing her ability to compete with the elite of the game.

What Does This Mean For Sonay Kartal?

This result should provide Kartal with a tremendous boost in confidence. After spending six months sidelined with a back injury, she returned with renewed belief, patience, and a clearer understanding of how she wants to play. More than just a strong tournament result, this run demonstrated her resilience and mental growth. The challenge now is consistency. If Sonay Kartal can build on the momentum gained from this breakthrough performance, she has every reason to believe that even higher rankings and deeper runs on the biggest stages are within reach.
