First Davis Cup victory

Davis Cup Final, France

Rubber 4, Day 3: [CR2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs. [CR26] Richard Gasquet (FRA)

The Swiss team can celebrate its first Davis Cup trophy thanks to Federer’s determined play today.  However, we cannot forget that [CR4] Stan Wawrinka played just as important a role in this victory. Although it was unlikely that the French team could come back from their 1-2 deficit, Federer made sure that he squashed any hopes when he defeated Gasquet easily, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Aching back aside, Federer played a much more “Federer-like” match today.  He moved much better, was alert to his opportunities, served well and controlled the match from the very beginning.  Federer had no trouble asserting his will and his determination to win the Davis Cup trophy  was evident in his relentless attack of every ball.  Gasquet never had a chance because he did not have enough game to challenge Federer.
