M. Lucic-Baroni Moved Us To Tears

WEEK: 01.30.2017

As usually happens after a Major tournament, there were massive upheavals in the rankings; however, the mover of the week is Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.  Her impressive run to the semifinals of the Australian Open reminded us she was a teenage prodigy when she broke on the scene at the age of 14 and much was expected of her. Most of you may know her story, she was abused by her father and eventually it got so bad she had to seek asylum in the USA with her siblings and mother.  The physical and psychological trauma took a toll on her game and she stepped away from tennis for approximately 6 years.  She persevered because of her faith and her love of the game and it was so nice to see her reach the semifinals of a Major and achieve her highest career singles ranking in the process.
