Rough Day For The Americans

Thirty-one American players entered the main draw of the 2017 Australian Open.  On day three, only 20 Americans remained in the draw (9 men and 11 women).  At the end of the day, 8 more Americans had bowed out (4 men and 4 women). It was a rough day for American players down under on day three and it will not get any easier as the tournament progresses.

[17] Roger Federer (SUI) def. Noah Rubin (USA) 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3)

[7] Garbine Muguruza (ESP) def. Samantha Crawford (USA) 7-5, 6-4

[11] Elina Svitolina (UKR) vs. Julia Boserup (USA) 6-4, 6-1

[4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) def. Steve Johnson (USA) 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

Shelby Rogers (USA) lost to Ashleigh Barty (AUS) 5-7, 1-6

[15] Serena/Venus Williams (USA) vs. Timea Babos/Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova W/O…the sisters withdrew.

[31] Sam Querrey (USA) def. Alex De Minaur (AUS) 7-6(5), 6-0, 6-1

Alison Riske (USA) def. [20] Shuai Zhang (CHN) 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-1

[10] Tomas Berdych (CZE) def. Ryan Harrison (USA) 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-2

McHale/Muhammad (USA) lost to [13] Srebotnik/Zheng 5-7, 6-7(6)

Varvara Lepchenko (USA) lost to Ying-Ying Duan (CHN) 1-6, 6-3, 8-10

[19] John Isner (USA) vs. Mischa Zverev (GER) 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-7(7), 7-9.  This was a tough loss for the American who had a two sets lead and let it slip away.

Coco Vandeweghe (USA) def. Pauline Parmentier (FRA) 6-4, 7-6(5)

Huber/Sanchez (USA) def. Brengle/Rodionova 7-6(4), 6-2

LOTS OF SEEDS FELL BY THE WAYSIDE

[14] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) lost to Andreas Seppi (ITA) 6-1, 7-6(1), 4-6, 2-6, 8-10

[10] Carla Suarez Navarro lost to Sorana Cirstea (ROU) 6-7(1), 3-6

[7] Marin Cilic (CRO) lost to Daniel Evans (GBR) 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 3-6

[29] Monica Puig (PUR) lost to Mona Barthel (GER) 4-6, 4-6

[27] Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) lost to Kristyna Pliskova (CZE) 4-6, 6-7(8)
