Men’s Championship Match: It was a great weekend for Dominic Thiem (AUT), who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Thiem led their head-to-head 3:2 going into this match. Tsitsipas had an opportunity to even their head-to-head and looked to be well on his way to doing so after he secured the first set, but it was not to be as Thiem dug deep to fight off the opposition and then run away with the third set. Tsitsipas had the opportunity to win this match in straight sets; however, he got tentative and Thiem elevated his game at those critical moments to fight back and claim the victory. This was the fourth singles title of the season for the Austrian and his fifteenth career singles title.
Women’s Champion Match: Ashleigh Barty (AUS) lost to Naomi Osaka (JPN) in three sets. The Australian won the first set; however, Osaka fought back to win the next two sets and claim the 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. This was the second consecutive title of the season for the Japanese player, who looks to be getting her form back after some recent issues with her coaching team and her left knee. This was the third title of the season for Osaka and her fifth WTA singles title overall.
Rakuten Open Tennis Championships
It was another successful weekend for the number one ranked ATP Tour player. The odds were stacked against Millman, who had never won a set against Djokovic in their two previous encounters, and the Serbian kept that trend alive today after he secured the title in straight sets. Novak Djokovic (SRB) defeated John Millman (AUS) 6-3, 6-2 to claim his seventy-sixth career singles title.
