9 Americans Left In Singles At Wimbledon

There are four American men left in singles: Sebastian Korda, Denis Kudla, Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Fritz. For years, Pete Sampras was the dominant American on grass. Since Sampras, we have been waiting for someone to step up. For sure, playing in an era where there was Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic certainly did not make it easy. However, we just have not been able to produce a player of the caliber of Sampras, Agassi, or Courier. Is it a question of hunger, complacency, or a combination of both?

Madison Keys Only Woman To Advance Today

On the women’s side, there are five Americans left in singles: Madison Brengle, Madison Keys, Shelby Rogers, Sloane Stephens, and Coco Gauff. There are four veterans and then there is Coco Gauff. It’s awful that the fans and the public put so much stress on the shoulders on the seventeen year old, but that comes with the territory. Americans are desperate to have a player step up and be consistently dominant week to week. Are we expecting too much given the changing landscape of the game?

American Results on Day 5

Seven American players contested their third round matches today and it was almost a complete bust. However, Keys and Korda saved the day. First to fall was Frances Tiafoe. He lost to the big serving Russian, Karen Khachanov, in straight sets. Next was Shelby Rogers. Rogers lost to Elena Rybakina, the eighteenth seed, 1-6, 4-6. Then it was Sloane Stephens, who gave a valiant effort despite her injured right knee. Stephens lost to red-hot Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.

Madison Brengle was the fourth American to lose on day five. Viktorija Golubic easily defeated Brengle 6-2, 6-1. No one expected Denis Kudla to beat Novak Djokovic; thus, it was no surprise that he lost 4-6, 3-6, 6-7 (7). The first victory for the Americans came by way of young Sebastian Korda. Korda defeated the British number one, [22] Daniel Evans, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.  [23] Madison Keys gave us the second victory for the day when she defeated [13] Elise Mertens. Keys served big and played even bigger when it mattered to secure the 7-5, 6-3 victory.
