[4] Jessica Pegula won the battle of Jessicas in under one hour. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro offered up a bit more resistance in the second set, but it was a little too late. Pegula won 6-1, 6-3. [7] Coco Gauff contested her match against a fellow American, Claire Liu. Liu had her chances in the third set but let the moment get to her and got so tight she could not keep the ball in play. In the end Gauff got lucky and won 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2. Is Gauff’s game good enough to get her to the final? Her next opponent, Belinda Bencic, will test her even more.

[7] Novak Djokovic defeated [25] Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4). [8] Daniil Medvedev ran into a resurgent Jan-Lennard Struff. Struff is known for his big serve and heavy grounds strokes. Today there was not much Medvedev could do to derail the German. Struff won 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-5. [19] Anna Kalinskaya fought hard to even the match, but in the end it was not enough. [11] Belinda Bencic won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(10-6).
American [21] Tommy Paul won the first set but lost the match. Paul led their H2H 3:1 going into this match. What happened? The Polish player was hungrier and rediscovered his top ten form. Hubert Hurkacz won 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2. [23] Rafael Jodar missed his opportunity against Shintaro Mochizuki. The Spaniard squandered numerous opportunities to go up 2-0 sets and in the end that cost him dearly. Mochizuki won 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4.

Errors flew off his racquet, and many were unforced. Safiullin won 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Keep in mind that although the Russian had to go through the qualifying rounds, he was once ranked thirty-six. Like so many players before him, his career was derailed by injury. Thus, kudos to him for hanging tough.
